Municipal Market

The place to shop for fresh local produce, the Olesa Municipal Market has numerous stalls offering every kind of food: meat, fish,  handmade sausages, fruit and vegetables grown by the sellers, seafood, beans, poultry, and dried fruit, as well as precooked dishes prepared by catering businesses.

The Municipal Market is much more than a place to shop. It is a meeting place for the locals, for social interaction that contributes to the vitality of the municipality, with a wide variety of quality products, personalized treatment and the assurance of good service.

The market is involved in the social, festive and cultural life of the town, participating in the celebration of public events like the Carnival festival by organizing food tastings, where people can sample dishes prepared by the market shopkeepers.

The Municipal Market is located in a large building located in Olesa’s Plaça de Catalunya, that opens out onto all four sides of the square. Designed by the architect Jeroni Martorell i Terrats, the market was opened on October 1, 1932, and expanded forty years later (1972) with the construction of the adjoining building for the sale of fish. Since it was remodeled in 1993, it has a much more modern look, combined with the historic significance of a building that is listed among Catalonia’s Architectural Heritage sites.

Olesa de Montserrat is a municipality rich in culture and tradition, located in the foothills of the mountain of Montserrat. Olesa de Montserrat is located in the north of the comarca (county) of Baix Llobregat, in the subcomarca of Montserratí, halfway between Barcelona and the Montserrat Monastery. The natural area of the municipality, with its beautiful and magnificent scenery, is bounded by the Llobregat river and the mountain chains of Sant Salvador de les Espases and Puigventós. Olesa’s roots are markedly agricultural; it is noted in particular for its cultivation of olives of the palomar or Olesan variety, native to the region, from which the famous Olesan oil is extracted.
