A protected area of exceptional geological significance. This site is listed by the Catalan government’s Department of Territory and Sustainability for the presence of certain features that make it a point of considerable international importance. Its huge rock formations provide key information for understanding the geology of Catalonia. Visitors can observe the fault that brings Paleozoic material (from the primary era) into contact with Cenozoic material (from the tertiary era) and that separates the Catalan Pre-Coastal Range from the fossa of the Vallès-Penedès Basin.
It appeared as a result of a tectonic movement 30 million years ago and is a source of valuable information, attracting researchers from numerous institutes and universities to carry out studies here throughout the year. This outcrop is made of fault gouge with bluish tones resulting from the deformation and crushing of the slate, giving rise to large badlands or ravines due to wind and water erosion.
Ribes Blaves can be reached via Highway B-120 (Olesa-Viladecavalls), taking the exit leading to the residential area of the same name. The fault is the same one that produced the Roques Blaves formations in the municipality of Esparreguera.
OLESA TOURISM
Olesa de Montserrat is a municipality rich in culture and tradition, located in the foothills of the mountain of Montserrat. Olesa de Montserrat is located in the north of the comarca (county) of Baix Llobregat, in the subcomarca of Montserratí, halfway between Barcelona and the Montserrat Monastery. The natural area of the municipality, with its beautiful and magnificent scenery, is bounded by the Llobregat river and the mountain chains of Sant Salvador de les Espases and Puigventós. Olesa’s roots are markedly agricultural; it is noted in particular for its cultivation of olives of the palomar or Olesan variety, native to the region, from which the famous Olesan oil is extracted.
